Ever since we bought our colonial-style house last May, I’ve been dreaming about how I would decorate it for Christmas. One of my favorite features of these homes are the giant windows and I couldn’t wait to put Christmas wreaths in all of them for the holiday season.
I bought 8 wreaths out of the $3 bin at Michaels. Only $24 total for all my wreaths, so if you are looking to dress up your home year after year, here’s the place. I also bought 4 spools of red velvet ribbon (2.5 inches x 5 yards) to make the bows. I was originally just going to buy 8 bows that were pre-made but I didn’t like the bow selection or the ribbon used, and it would have been cheaper to make them myself. Just make sure you get the ribbon with the wire on the edges so the bows keep shape. This was the best BOW MAKING TUTORIAL I found that helped me make my bows if you are interested in doing the same. I used half a spool of ribbon for 1 bow (2.5 yards). Use wire or a pipe cleaner to fasten the bows to the wreaths.
Putting the wreaths on the windows was the tricky part. Most of the blogs I read had double hung windows to hang their wreaths. Open the window from the top and hang the wreaths using fishing wire or ribbon. Then shut the window with the ribbon inside it and you’ve got yourself a perfectly hung wreath in the middle of your window.
My windows are only single hung (open from the bottom) so I couldn’t use the same approach. Instead, I opened the window and fished string between the two panes. I also had to tie up the wreath through the middle so it would hang centered in the window. Once I had the string between the two panes, I closed the window and taped the string on the inside. Voila!
