Your sweet little newborn is here and you want to preserve these memories forever, right?? Babies grow SO FAST, so make sure you get a newborn session scheduled asap after (or better yet BEFORE) they are born. But once it’s scheduled, how do you prepare for newborn photos?
You can schedule a newborn session with me HERE!
Newborn sessions are typically scheduled within the first 10 days after the baby is born. It’s during this time that baby is most sleepy which is perfect for photos. I’ve also done newborn sessions at a month old with a completely awake baby, and it works out fine, but it’s a dice roll! In my experience, it’s always easiest to schedule sooner rather than later.
When I photograph newborns, I prefer the session take place in your home so that we can keep baby in a warm and comfortable environment. Some photographers like studios and prefer using props like bean bags and such, but I prefer a more lifestyle approach. If you have a decorated nursery, that’s great! If not, all I really need is a big window and a clean background (usually a bed or a blanket on the floor). The middle of the day is usually the best for indoor light, but also pay attention to when baby is most sleepy so that we can schedule the session during that time.
For clothing, I find that neutrals are best for baby. Bright colors or patterns sometimes distract from their little features. Before the session, lay out a white onesie and maybe one other outfit. Also set out some neutral swaddling blankets and any accessories that are important to you (hair bows, booties, favorite toys, etc). And most importantly, make sure to plan for a feeding right before photos so that baby is sleepy and has a full tummy. Hungry babies do not like to be photographed, lol.
I hope these tips help you as you prepare for newborn photos :)
