Since Jason is in Medical school, the summer after his first year was basically going to be his only summer off for a long, long time. We wanted to make the most of it by flying to Utah and California to visit family, spending a few days in New York City, and of course we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to go to the Outer Banks in North Carolina!
It was kind of a spontaneous trip! I had a weekend off from this busy wedding season and it happened to be Jason’s birthday that week. We wanted to do something fun since he had to go back to school in 2 weeks. We had been wanting to go to the OBX but hadn’t made any concrete plans until some friends of ours found a vacation rental for a super good deal! We jumped on it right away and 4 days later we were driving the 6 hour drive to North Carolina.
Day 1 we arrived in the later afternoon after unloading our bags at the house. We walked down to the beach in Kitty Hawk and played in the sand with the little ones:) We ended the evening at Hurricane Mo’s Beachside Bar and Grill. The crab cakes and fish tacos were delicious!!
Day 2 we set out earlier and found a spot on the beach in Nags Head. The boys left to rent a canopy (which was heaven!), beach chairs, and boogie boards. We spent most of the day playing in the sand, boogie boarding, and snacking under the canopy. Soooo relaxing. :) Jason attempted to teach Kara and Chris how to boogie board but we all know who the best teacher is… me of course! By the end of the day, after I imparted my wisdom, they were boogie boarding like pros! For dinner we took a break from the fish and visited Pigman’s Bar-B-Que to treat ourselves to some ribs and pork sandwiches. I had never tried hushpuppies before and after Pigman’s it will not be my last!
Day 3 there was suppose to be a rainstorm in the afternoon so we chilled on the beach all morning and then headed out to Duck to walk the boardwalk and try some Duck Donuts. Let me tell you, I don’t really care for donuts too often (not ever Krispy Kreme donuts!!) but these were delicious! The make them fresh and warm when you order so they just melt in your mouth.. I’m salivating just thinking about it lol!
We loved our trip and I think it will definitely go again soon! We especially had fun with Kara and Chris and their two cute kids:) Who needs to have babies when you have friends that will let you spend a whole trip with theirs ;)
