Last month I had a mentoring session with Barbara Shoop from Barbara Shoop Photography. Barb is a Harrisburg, Pennsylvania film photographer and since one of my annual goals was to start shooting film, I gave her a call:) She was amazing to work with and answered all million of my questions.
I was super nervous while shooting this session. Film really makes you slow down and think about every shot you are taking. With digital I’m constantly snapping away and after taking like 800 pictures, I end up only giving 150 good ones to my clients. With film, I took 4 rolls of film which was about 144 frames. After going through all the scans I got from the lab, I ended up keeping 135 of the 144 pictures. I couldn’t believe that ratio! With digital I take 15 pictures of the same pose just to make sure I have enough options. With film since you are paying about 30 cents a picture, I definitely didn’t want to waste a single frame by taking multiple shots of the same thing. Shooting film made me more creative and more conscious about my posing. Because of this I got an amazing variety of pictures:)
All these images were shot on my Nikon F100 with Fuji 400h, 35mm film. And I should probably mention that these film images are 100% untouched and unedited by me. Everything was done at Richards Film Lab.
I also included a few digital images at the end of this post just for fun;)
And here are just a couple of my digital images from the session:)
