Rainy Wedding Day Tips for Brides and Grooms

The weather on your wedding day is calling for rain. This is not what you had planned, but you can’t change the weather, so what should be your next steps??

Rainy wedding days can be a huge downer if you aren’t prepared for them, but fear not because rainy days can still be beautiful! If you don’t believe me, just take a look at Abigail and Peter’s Wedding day. It rained almost the entire day and it was so beautiful! We did portraits both indoors and outdoors when there were quick breaks in the rain. It also rained all through the ceremony and portrait time on Paula and Mark’s Wedding day, but again, still got some gorgeous portraits and we even had an incredible sunset when the rain cleared up! Below I’ve written out my rainy wedding day tips.

TIP 1- CLEAR UMBRELLAS

If rain is in the forecast, I recommend ordering a bunch of clear umbrellas on Amazon. I like the clear ones best because they are the least distracting, and the go well with any color scheme. If you are in a time crunch for ordering online, I always bring a couple clear umbrellas for the bride and groom, but if you want some for the whole wedding party, buy them in bulk on Amazon, or you can pick some up at your local Target. They usually have a few at each store, so you may have to go to a few to make sure you have enough.

TIP 2- WATERPROOF BOOTS

For you brides, if you don’t own a pair of rain boots, now may be a great time to get a pair – even if you’re just wearing them in between shooting locations. Most of the time we won’t even see your cute wedding shoes during portraits because your dress will cover them up, so it’s definitely worth it to keep your feet dry with water-proof shoes. I own a pair of Hunter Boots that I wear to my rainy weddings and absolutely adore them!

TIP 3- CHECK IN WITH YOUR VENDOR TEAM

If you’re not working with a planner, it might be a good idea to check in with your entire vendor team to make sure they’re aware of the weather. Hair and makeup may need to be tweaked to withstand humidity and if your wedding is outdoors. DJs and bands may need to take extra precaution to protect their gear. A quality rental team can also minimize the amount of mud at outdoor events. If there isn’t an indoor backup location for your outdoor wedding, rent a tent so you can still have the outdoor wedding of your dreams! I love the tents that Party Reflections offers! They have locations all over North Carolina.

TIP 4- CHECK WITH YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER ABOUT PORTRAIT LOCATION OPTIONS

Some venues have only outdoor portrait options, and that’s ok! That’s why we have umbrellas so that I can still take brides and grooms all over the venue grounds for those gorgeous portraits without being restricted by rain. I can also help put a plan in place to ensure beautiful images in other locations. This plan will include a good covered option for family photos and wedding party photos. This may be on a covered porch or even inside the venue. And trust me, your photos will still turn out beautiful!

TIP 5- BE FLEXIBLE

On many rainy wedding days, the rain doesn’t last for the whole day. If we are flexible with the timeline, we can can still get those outdoor photos when there is a break in the rain. This is exactly what I did at Abigail and Peter’s wedding. We watched the rain and as soon as there was a break, we ran out and did all the photos! There are always options if you are willing to be flexible.

TIP 6- STAY CALM

Having rain on your wedding day isn’t the worse thing. Some may even say it’s good luck! The dress is probably going to get wet, the timeline is probably going to be changed around, and you may not get the sunset photos you imagined (although I will say that some of my most favorite sunset photos are from rainy wedding days after the clouds cleared up). If you trust in your photographer, and your vendor team, you’ll still have an amazing wedding day with amazing photos at the end of it. Chances are, your vendors have worked COUNTLESS rainy wedding days and know exactly what they need to do to ensure a perfect day.

Rainy day weddings may require a little more flexibility and creativity, but there isn’t any reason why they can’t be as beautiful and as joyful as sunny weddings! If you have any additional tips for rainy weddings, post a comment below!
