What to Wear for Your Engagement Session | A South Carolina Wedding Photographer’s Guide

What to Wear for Engagement Photos | by South Carolina Photographer Hillary Muelleck

One of the questions I get asked most often as a South Carolina wedding photographer is, “What should we wear for our engagement session?” And honestly, it’s one of the most important decisions you’ll make when preparing for your photos.

The right outfits don’t just make your photos look beautiful—they help you feel comfortable, confident, and like yourselves. My goal during every engagement session is to create timeless images that feel natural, effortless, and full of genuine connection. When you feel good in what you’re wearing, that confidence shows up in every photograph.

Whether we’re wandering through downtown Greenville, exploring Charleston’s historic streets, hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Asheville, or watching the sunset in a South Carolina field, your wardrobe plays a huge role in creating images you’ll love for decades.

My Philosophy on Engagement Sessions

I believe engagement sessions should feel more like a fun date than a photoshoot.

Instead of stiff poses and forced smiles, I focus on movement, conversation, and genuine interaction. I want you laughing together, holding hands, stealing quiet moments, and simply enjoying being with one another. Those are the moments that tell your story.

The clothing you choose should support that experience—not distract from it.

I always encourage couples to wear outfits that feel elevated but still authentically them.

The Goal: Timeless, Coordinated, and Authentic

The best engagement session outfits complement one another without matching exactly. Think coordinated instead of identical.

Choose clothing that reflects your personalities while also photographing beautifully. When both of your outfits work together, your connection becomes the focus of every image.

What to Wear for Your Engagement Session

Choose a Color Palette

Start with two to four complementary colors instead of trying to match exactly.

Soft neutrals, earthy tones, muted blues, sage greens, warm browns, creams, and dusty pastels photograph beautifully in almost every South Carolina location.

Rather than wearing identical white shirts and jeans, think about how your colors work together as a whole.

Mix Solids with Subtle Texture

Solid colors are always a safe choice.

If you’d like to incorporate patterns, keep them subtle and let only one person wear them. Texture photographs especially well, so don’t be afraid of knits, lace, embroidery, linen, or other fabrics that add visual interest without overwhelming the photo.

Dress for Your Location

Your outfits should fit the environment.

If we’re photographing your engagement session in downtown Greenville or Charleston, a chic dress with a blazer or sport coat creates an elevated, timeless look.

Planning a beach session? Relaxed clothing with bare feet in the sand feels effortless and perfectly fits the setting.

Mountain sessions often pair beautifully with layers, sweaters, boots, or flowing dresses that move in the breeze.

When your wardrobe matches your location, your gallery feels cohesive and intentional.

Plan Two Outfits

If your engagement session allows time for multiple looks, I always recommend bringing:

  • One dressier outfit
  • One more casual outfit

When you’re deciding between two options, I almost always recommend choosing the dressier one. Even your casual outfit should feel polished and intentional rather than everyday.

Wear What Makes You Feel Confident

This is probably my biggest piece of advice.

Wear clothing that fits well and makes you feel amazing.

Confidence photographs beautifully.

I’m a huge believer in body positivity, but I also know we all have certain things we’re more self-conscious about. If you know you don’t love showing your arms, choose sleeves. If you feel your best in a flowy dress, wear one.

Prepare Your Outfits Ahead of Time

A little preparation goes a long way.

Before your session:

  • Lay both outfits side-by-side to make sure they coordinate.
  • Try everything on.
  • Steam or iron your clothing.
  • Make sure shoes are clean.
  • Remove tags or stickers.
  • Avoid making outfit decisions the night before.

Planning ahead gives you time to order additional options if needed and helps eliminate unnecessary stress on session day.

What NOT to Wear for Your Engagement Photos

Some clothing choices simply don’t photograph as well as others.

I recommend avoiding:

  • Large logos or visible branding
  • Graphic t-shirts
  • Tiny prints that can appear distorted on camera
  • Busy plaid patterns
  • Too many competing patterns
  • Perfectly “matching” outfits
  • Clothing that doesn’t feel like your personal style

One of my biggest lessons came from panic-shopping before having my own photos taken. I bought something that looked amazing on someone else—but once I wore it, I didn’t feel like myself at all.

If you’re ever unsure, choose the outfit you already know you love.

Tips for Women

Flowy clothing almost always photographs beautifully.

Some of my favorite options include:

  • Dresses with movement
  • Skirts paired with fitted tops
  • Linen, cotton, silk, or chiffon fabrics
  • Soft romantic colors
  • Delicate jewelry and accessories
  • Subtle texture like lace or embroidery

A fitted top paired with a flowy skirt or dress is one of the most universally flattering combinations and creates beautiful movement in photos.

For beauty prep, I recommend:

  • Scheduling hair color appointments 1–2 weeks beforehand
  • Having clean or freshly polished nails
  • Booking professional hair and makeup if you’d like a little extra pampering

Professional makeup is designed to photograph well and often gives just the right amount of polish while still looking natural.

Tips for Men

Guys—your outfit matters just as much.

Well-fitted clothing instantly elevates your photos.

Some great options include:

  • Button-down shirts
  • Henleys
  • Sweaters
  • Sport coats
  • Quarter-zips (depending on the location)
  • Tailored chinos or dark denim

Make sure your shoes are clean and match the overall formality of your outfit.

I also recommend getting a haircut about a week before your session so it looks natural rather than freshly cut.

And one final reminder—empty your pockets before we start! Phones, wallets, and keys create noticeable bulges that are surprisingly visible in photos.

I also love helping my couples while they’re shopping. If you’re deciding between two dresses, wondering if your outfits coordinate, or need another opinion, send me photos! I’m always happy to help you brainstorm before your session.

Where to Shop for Engagement Session Outfits

Some of my favorite places to recommend include:

These stores consistently offer timeless, romantic pieces that photograph beautifully.

Your Engagement Session Should Feel Like You

At the end of the day, your engagement photos aren’t about perfect outfits.

They’re about documenting this exciting season of your lives together.

The right wardrobe simply helps remove distractions so your personalities, your relationship, and your connection become the focus. That’s always my goal as your South Carolina wedding photographer—creating photographs that feel effortless, timeless, and unmistakably you.

If you’re planning your wedding and looking for a photographer who values genuine moments over stiff posing, I’d love to help tell your story.
