I never really thought of myself as the “headshots” photographer. Most headshots that I had experienced were from my school days, with a huge light setup, funny colored backdrop, and stiff poses. I just got it in my head that that’s how headshots were suppose to be. At least until I was asked by a local photographer to take some new business headshots for here. Since I’m a natural light photographer, I decided to approach these headshots with what I wished most headshots session were like. These Winston Salem business headshots were taken in a studio with a white wall, lots of natural light, and exactly zero stiff poses.
I love when headshot sessions are a reflection of the brand and personality of the business. You can’t gauge a person’s personality with a stiff smiling-at-the-camera photo. I think that “headshots” should be taken with a variety of crops, positions, and a mix of smiling/laughing/serious faces. For Lauren’s headshots I worked with a few stools and chairs, moving her in different positions with each one. I always made sure she was turned towards the windows so that she’d constantly have that soft light on her face. For 20 minutes of photos, we were able to get a huge variety of photos that really showed off her fun personality.
How often should you be updating your headshots?
I say you should be updating your headshots at least once a year. It’s really important that your business has fresh, current photos of yourself representing your brand. If you can update them twice a year, or even every quarter, that’s even better! I’ve found that posting updated photos of myself ot social media always gets tons of engagement. Your followers are always excited to see the face behind the brand that they love so much, so it’s definitely worth it to get new headshots often.
